Dewey EMS today took delivery of our new 2006 Horton Type III ambulance. This unit is replacing our 1995 Horton, Ambulance 1381. A near duplicate of 1382 and 1383, it will become a well used ambulance in the years to come. Also in the past couple of weeks, Dewey EMS has added laptops to all of our units. At this point they are able to do mapping and our run reports, but in the near future we will be adding Computer Aided Dispatching, or CAD, software to our list of software. This will allow for a great decrease in the amount of radio traffic that is required between the ambulances and our dispatcher.
(Side Bar: This unit was placed in service on 3/23/06 after passing it's Pa DOH inspection.)
Dewey Fire today welcomed back into the fold Engine 13-13. However, it is a new 2006 KME Predator Chasse Class A pumper. While this truck was delivered on the 12th, the truck will not be seeing service for about a month while the fire squad places all of our equipment onto the truck in a working arrangement. This truck is equipped with a 1500gpm pump (largest for Dewey), 750 gallon water tank and 50 gallon Class A foam tank. The most unique feature of this truck, however is the addition of a CAF system, or Compressed Air Foam System. While new to the fire service as a whole, this truck represents the 1st of its kind in Hellertown, the 2nd in Northampton County (Our sister company Se-Wy-Co's 18-12 is an E-One w/ CAFS) and the 4th in the Lehigh Valley (Upper Saucon Township Fire has 2). This truck helps usher firefighting in Hellertown in the the 21st. century and beyond. (Side bar: This unit was placed in front line service as of February 8th, 2006.)
Dewey EMS, in part due to our rising call volume over the past
few year, the last 2 in particular, received our new 2002 Horton Ambulance.
A near twin to our 1998 Horton, this truck is the newest addition to our fleet.
However, to house this new unit, we had to bid a fond farewell to the 1959 American
LaFrance engine, Engine 13-13. Hopefully with the addition of 13-83, some much
needed maintenance will be able to be completed to our other two EMS units and
will also help save some wear and tear on them as well. (Side bar: This unit was placed in service on 10/31/02 after
passing the PA Department of Health inspection.)
The Dewey Fire Company and EMS helped celebrate the 100th anniversary
of the New Providence Fire Department in New Providence, NJ. Dewey was represented

very well. 13-81 took 1st place for best EMS unit. 13-41 placed 2nd in the rescue
category (a combination of Heavy, Medium and Light rescues). And Dewey Fire
Company, with only 8 marchers, placed 2nd in Marching without a band. Thanks
to all who participated and helped prepare the trucks for the parade.

the equipment for the parade. Engine 13-11 also participated in the parade,
but was not judged.
Dewey Fire Company has recently taken the possession of 20 new
Scott Health and Safety Self Contained Breathing Apparatus setups. These new Scott
Packs are from the Air Fifty Series. 18 of the packs are of the 2.2 version type
(2216 psi) and are rated for 30 minutes a piece. The other 2 are of the 4.5 version
type (4500psi) and are rated each at 1 hour. These packs are scheduled to begin
being used on or about March 3, 2001. The new air packs are lighter in weight
than the previous 2.2 types currently used and will help reduce back strain on
firefighters. The weight is decreased do to the use of Kevlar wrapped cylinders
and by the use of lightweight, but stronger aluminum frames. Also a part of both
packs is an integrated Personal Safety Device, which helps aid other firefighters
to find a firefighter who has gone down at a fire scene. The total weight of a
2.2 version Air 50 Pack is approximately 30 pounds. Also included in the package
were new voice emitters units, to help aid in communications at a fire scene.
